Trailblazer Day Camp for first year Scouts

Tree House For first year Scouts, Trailblazer Day Camp provides young Scouts with a positive first time experience with summer camp. Scouts participate in our morning Dan Beard program which is run by trained camp staff members, many of them are Eagle Scouts. Dan Beard emphasizes the patrol method, provides instruction in outdoor skills and assists Scouts with working on advancement requirements from Tenderfoot to First Class. After lunch, Dan Beard Scouts participate in either Swimming merit badge, for Scouts who successfully complete the BSA swimmer test, or instructional swim, for Scouts who need to work on their swimming strokes in order to complete their swimmer test. depending on swimming ability. Scouts attend aquatics from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Scouts can also choose to work on a non-aquatics merit badge offered at 2:00 pm if deemed necessary.

Coming for more than one week? Most first year Scouts participate in the Dan Beard program their first week at camp. Once they realize how fun Camp Somers is, they can sign up for additional sessions and attend the Ernest Thompson Seton program which covers advancement beyond the Dan Beard program or come back to work on more merit badges.

SwimmingTrailblazer Day Camp for Older Scouts

For the older Scout, the Trailblazer program allows the Scout to focus on earning on merit badges, completing partials, or working on advancement. Older Scouts often come to day camp because they have evening activities that do not allow them stay overnight. Many older Scouts come to Camp Somers with their troops or with the Provisional Camp Troop for the overnight camp experience and then attend the Trailblazer program to earn more or complete merit badges. The Trailblazer program for older Scouts provides a unique and customized camp experience based on each individual Scout's needs.
